Jane, a young, would-be bluestocking who is seeking marriage only to avoid an unfortunate match with her cousin, and George, who is marrying only out of obligation and wishes to avoid traditional courtship, “meet” anonymously through the matrimonial ads in the newspaper and begin corresponding.
Meanwhile, Jane is attempting to start her own circulating library but is overlooked because she is a woman, and George is trying to convince Jane’s best friend (his sister, Anne) to get married. Face to face, Jane and George sometimes butt heads with these disparate goals. In their letters, however, they are slowly falling in love with one another.
